Gustav Mahler ebnete Puccinis Weg an die wichtigste Opernbühne Europas, nach Wien, erst spät, indem er "Madame Butterfly" zur dortigen Erstaufführung annahm. Zuvor hatte Mahler sogar einmal eine deutsche Erstaufführung Puccinis selbst dirigiert, nämlich "Le Villi" in Hamburg 1892. Das wars aber auch schon; sein Verhältnis zu Puccini blieb stets eher unterkühlt. Gustav Mahler plained Puccini's way to the most important opera in Europe, to Vienna, very late, when he accepted "Madame Butterfly" for premiére. He had already conducted a German premiére of a work of Puccini, "Le Villi" at Hamburg 1892. But that was it, his relation to Puccini stayed in distance.
